Dental assisting is one of the most accessible entry points into Australian healthcare, and one of the most misunderstood. It isn't a registered profession, there's no mandatory qualification to work chairside, and the barrier to getting started is far lower than most people are told.

Who you are changes what matters, though. An overseas-trained dentist bridging toward ADC registration has different priorities from someone moving across from retail or admin. Pick the route that fits.

The short version, whoever you are

• No registration required. Dental assistants are not registered with the Dental Board of Australia.
• No mandatory qualification. Certificate III improves employability and pay classification, but it is not a prerequisite to work chairside.
• Radiography is the exception. Taking X-rays requires an approved qualification and, in most states, a radiation use licence. Rules vary by jurisdiction.
• Pay is award-covered. The Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 sets minimum rates, and classifications changed significantly from April 2026.
• Immunisation and a police check are commonly requested by employers. Start those early — they take longer than you'd expect.
